Human Trafficking rate rises in Nepal
The human trafficking rate in Nepal has gone up by 150 percent as compared to last year. According to experts after the earthquake of 2015 the numbers have tentatively increased as compared to last year. In the fiscal year 2015-16, a total of 212 cases were reported which was 16 percent higher when compared to the fiscal year 2014-15 that reported 181 cases.
Human trafficking problem has been a major hurdle where poverty, low-income and high illiteracy rate have been reasoned the cause. Most of the people are trafficked in the name of high salary jobs to foreign countries where they are mentally and physically abused and exploited. In most of the cases people are channeled through various networks of agents from one country to another.
The US State Department, Trafficking in Persons Report 2016 states that Nepal is a source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children subjected to forced labor and sex trafficking. Nepali women and girls are subjected to sex trafficking in Nepal, India, the Middle East, Asia, and subSaharan Africa. Nepali men, women, and children are subjected to forced labor in Nepal, India, the Middle East, Asia, and the United States in construction, factories, mines, domestic work, begging, and the adult entertainment industry.
