Nepal hosts its first girl summit in Kathmandu

Highlighting the theme of ending child marriage by 2030, the first Girl summit was inaugurated here in Soltee crown plaza by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari with Prince Harry as the chief guest.

The one-day summit was organised by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare with technical and financial support from DFID and UNICEF.

The summit majorly concentrated on the issue of child marriage and brought together girls and boys to discuss challenges to eradicating child marriage in Nepal and ways to create conditions for every girl to reach her full potential.

Various stakeholder representing  youth, community members, activists, religious leaders, government officials, diplomats, UN and civil society representatives participated the conference in speeding up the intervention.


It said nearly half of all women in Nepal between the ages of 20 and 49 years were married before their 18th birthday. Of these, 15 per cent were not even 15-years-old at the time of marriage.
