Rapes Cases rise in Phindim

The Himalayan times reports, that in the past 10 days at least five rape cases have been reported in the eastern hilly district of Panchthar Phindim. The cases are reported to be of victims range from six to 75 years, and in most cases, the perpetrators are their own relatives.

The police have managed to book the culprits in three cases, with the perpetrator of another case on the run and yet another staying at home after the case was settled with the initiative of the police at the local level.

A six-year-old was raped by Tek Bahadur Kerung in Memeng-4 on Monday in her own house. The perpetrator was arrested after a complaint was filed by the victim’s family.

A day earlier, Prem Tamang of Yasok had raped two girls, an 11-year-old and a 19-year-old from his own village. Police said Tamang had been sexually abusing a teenage girl with impaired hearing for months.

Similarly, a 75-year-old woman of Memeng-4 was raped by her own nephew on August 14. Police closed the case after the perpetrator’s family agreed to fund her treatment.

Likewise, 37-year-old Bhawani Rai, who had made a rape attempt on his 11-year-old niece, has been on the run since the incident on July 11. Police said they were searching for him.
